An illegal demonstration of 250,000 shakes #Quebec society
by Isa Al-Jaza’iri, 23 May 2012
Tuesday, May 22nd saw the largest act of civil disobedience in Canadian history. Between 250,000 and 350,000 youth and workers came out onto the streets of Montreal and openly defied the emergency law that requires police approval of protest routes eight hours in advance. A widely publicized “official route” was broken; the crowd turned away, following an unannounced path.
The crowd was enormous, and easily broke the previous records set by the demonstrations on March 22 and April 22, proving that this movement was beginning to penetrate into wider layers of Quebec society. Jean Charest’s gamble that the movement could be smashed with police batons and emergency powers had backfired, badly.
Last week, Quebec premier Jean Charest announced Bill 78, a law attacking the right to protest of students and workers. The law bans protests within 50-metres of colleges and universities, institutes heavy fines for anyone who disrupts classes, and prohibits more than 50 people from congregating without police permission. The law aims to take aways students’ right to strike. This law is comparable to previous laws imposed on striking workers at Canada Post and Air Canada, forcing them back to work and also removing their right to strike.

#Poland to issue complete ban on #Monsanto’s genetically modified maize

Poland will impose a complete ban on growing the MON810 genetically modified strain of maize made by US company Monsanto on its territory, Agriculture Minister Marek Sawicki said Wednesday.
“The decree is in the works. It introduces a complete ban on the MON810 strain of maize in Poland,” Sawicki told reporters, adding that pollen of this strain could have a harmful effect on bees.
On March 9, seven European countries — Belgium, Britain, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Ireland and Slovakia — blocked a proposal by the Danish EU presidency to allow the cultivation of genetically-modified plants on the continent.
Seven days after that, France imposed a temporary ban on the MON810 strain.
Talks on allowing the growing of genetically-modified plants on EU soil are now deadlocked as no majority has emerged among the 27 member states.

India Slams Monsanto with Unprecedented ‘Biopiracy’ Charges
India has joined the conglomerate of nations directly opposed to the agricultural corruption brought upon by bloated biotechnology giant Monsanto, declaring legal action against the corporation for a crime dubbed ‘biopiracy‘. The charges were brought against Monsanto for utilizing a local eggplant variety to develop their own genetically modified version including the notorious biopesticide Bt. Monsanto’s Bt GMO crops are known to threaten the environment in addition to human health, and India considers Monsanto’s unauthorized testing of the crops to be biopiracy.
India’s National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) made the unprecedented decision as detailed in their official statements on the subject, joining nations like Hungary and Peru in their efforts to control Monsanto’s presence within their borders. Hungary was among the first to lead the charge, actually destroying more than 1,000 acres of Monsanto’s GM maize in direct defiance against the company. Peru also took a monumental stand against Monsanto, announcing a ten-year-ban on GMO crops and genetically modified ingredients.
In summary of the decision, the journal Nature Biotechnology states:
An Indian government agency has agreed to sue the developers of genetically modified (GM) eggplant for violating India’s Biological Diversity Act of 2002. India’s National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) is alleging that the developers of India’s first GM food crop—Jalna-based Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Company (Mahyco) partnered with St. Louis–based seed giant Monsanto and several local universities—used local varieties to develop the transgenic crop, but failed to gain the appropriate licenses for field trials.
Leaked Documents Show India May be Targeted for GMO Opposition
Will India be targeted by the United States and others for opposing GMO crops? Leaked documents have revealed that the United States may ‘penalize’ nations against Monsanto’s genetically modified creations with military-style trade wars and more. In fact, it was that in late 2007, the United States ambassador to France and business partner to George W. Bush, Craig Stapleton, requested that the European Union along with particular nations that did not support GMO crops face repercussions.
The ambassador plainly calls for ‘target retaliation’ against nations who are against using Monsanto’s genetically modified corn, despite research linking it to severe damage to your body. Therefore, the question must be asked as to whether or not the United States will attempt to ‘penalize’ India for taking such an unprecedented move against Monsanto. While that remains to be seen, it is clear that Monsanto is increasingly being resisted across the globe by nations and individuals alike.
Monsanto ‘Biotechnology Book for Kids’ Caught Brainwashing Children

‘Facing direct opposition from the public, biotechnology giants like Monsanto and Dow are now making a disturbing attempt to brainwash developing minds into accepting their genetically modified foods using blatant lies and propaganda.
In a last ditch effort to potentially sway public opinion, the Council for Biotechnology Information (CBI) has launched the “Biotechnology Basics Activity Book” for kids.
With the intent to be used by ‘agriculture and science teachers’, the activity book spreads absurd lies about GMO crops — even going as far as to say that they ‘improve our health’ and ‘help the environment’.
